Fuchū-shuku was the fourth post town on the Kōshū Kaidō, about 7.5 ri (roughly 29 km) from Nihonbashi, and in 1777 (An'ei 6) its meshi-mori hatago — inns employing serving women — received official license. It stood at the heart of Musashi Province, where the provincial capital and the sōja shrine (Ōkunitama Shrine) were located. Today it lies within Fuchū City, Tokyo, and major facilities such as Fuchū City Hall still stand near the center of the old post town.
